ICELANDIC GARDENING
HORNAFJOERDUR GREENHOUSE PROJECT
(2009-15)
Iceland
At the harbor of Hoefn, in Mikligardur, a project is growing guided by Hanna Jonsdottir, Valentina Maria-Maechler and Michou-Nanon de Bruijn. Hanna and Michou are directing the reacherch and
designing the greenhouses while Valentina watches over the growing process as a documentary Video-
designer. They are now interested in spending an effort in creating a new identity for gardening in
Hornafjoerdur area. Due to the expenses and mal-quality of vegetables and fruits on the market, urges
the awareness for different types/ methods of greenhouse gardening.
This project will develope over years in different fields. They want to investigate all sides of it and
gather more professional opinions, in alternative energy use, health and soil research.
The first prototype greenhouse is build. It will be transported in February to the swimming-pool (hot-tub)
of Hoefn. where it will be located under the slides and enjoy the warm-floored position. The first shape
is designed to grow a wide variety of vegetables. The high space is to grow tomatoes and,
ore beens. The lower space can be used for a range of floor growing plants. The controlled size will help to
capture the floor warmth, which exists in many Icelandic areas naturally by transporting the hot water from
a geiser.
